Writing Prompt – Day 51

The police department begs you to come back to work on a special case. Your former partner has turned and is now wanted for the murders of three co-workers.

My example :

Sargeant Garcia’s office begins to feel clammy inside. I wish he would just spit it out already.

“Enough with the small talk. Let’s talk why I really brought you here,” Garcia said.

Thank God, I thought. You would think I would be better at patience than I am, considering the field I used to work. But I never did learn how to control that part of me. It seems that time is always of the essence, nobody has time to waste it.

I hid how restless I feel and instead nodded, showing Garcia that I was ready for him to continue.

“Okay. I’m so sorry Nadine. There’s no easy way to say this.”

“Sarge, I can handle this. Please…” I made a motion with my hand encouraging him to spill it already.

“It’s Trevor…”

Now my heart sank. Maybe I’m not ready to hear it. Trevor is my ex-partner and before I moved on with my career, he was my best friend. I don’t know how well I’m going to take this news because I can already feel bile making its way up my throat. I already know the next words I’m going to hear.

“You won’t believe this but we need your help Nadine. Trevor… he…” Sargeant Garcia took a deep breath and shook his head, clearly still in disbelief himself. “Trevor killed Henry, Pete, and Gina. All assigned to the case you and Trev worked together for the drug cartel. I’m so sorry to tell you this in such an abrupt way.”

He allows me a moment of silence and I’m thankful because I feel overwhelmed. It’s not long enough before he breaks the silence, but I know this is an extremely urgent matter. More lives might be at stake if I don’t step up. So… Trevor’s not dead. Instead, he murdered three co-workers. I had to close my eyes to steady myself. I tried to wrap my head around this all, but one question was plaguing me. Why all these years while working with Trevor would he spare me? He could have killed me and covered it up while we were on the field way too many times to count. And the thing is, he would have gotten away with it. Not only that, but quite easily too. Do I really think Trevor could turn on us like this? Is it his own doing or is someone else pulling the strings? The more I ponder it, the more I start to get angry. If Trevor really is capable of being an undercover spy for the cartel, turning on us and revealing himself only a couple months after my last day at the department, and killing three co-workers that to my knowledge Trevor had no problem with, then this problem runs a lot deeper than I realize. I should see a shrink. To miss signs in someone like that, well, there must be something majorly wrong with me.

I shake off my thoughts as Garcia cuts through them. “Nadine, I’ll explain everything to you but I can’t do that unless you are working for us. You know the policy. And look, we desperately need your help. Three of us are dead. And he may be after more. You were the closest to Trevor. If anyone can do this, it’s you.”

I pondered just a second more and finally spoke with my hand out. “Okay Sarge, I’m gonna need my badge back.”

If there was only one more thing I was going to do, it would be this. And I won’t stop until every last piece of this case is solved. Starting with the first nagging question: Who is Trevor really?
