The Angels

Writing Prompt – Day 20

Last prompt of the week before we go into a break for the weekend!

Is your timer ready?

Good, let’s go!

What if angels lived among us?

My example :

Mariah slid her key into the door and pushed it open. She was exhausted from a never-ending loop of bad days, but she tried to hide how beaten down she had felt lately. Colton and Landon greeted her at the door.

“Momma! You’re home!” Little Colton exclaimed.

She tried to force a smile. “Hi sweetie,” she said, wrapping her arms around his little body.

Landon swept in for a side hug the moment Colton backed away. Mariah was blessed with sweet children who loved her beyond words. Glancing into the other room, she spotted her husband cooking dinner. Turning toward her, he smiled.

“Hey honey. Dinner will be ready soon,” he said, stirring the contents on the stove. “Laundry is done and the kids are bathed. We can have a relaxing night tonight.”

A small amount of tension from her body released into the air at the sound of his sweet, sweet words. “Thank you,” she said, walking over and kissing Ben on the lips.

The rest of the night rode out smoothly. After they all finished dinner together, the kids cleaned up after themselves with no arguing this time, and Ben loaded the dishwasher. When it was time for Colton and Landon to go to bed, the boys brushed their teeth, got their pajamas on, and prepared their heat-up bears.

Again, no arguing.

Every day didn’t always go like this but for the days like today, Mariah was praising an invisible force. No power struggles, no adding to her already spent mind, no frustrations tonight. She was beyond grateful. The thought of enduring any more added stress was enough for Mariah to nearly break down.

Snuggling up with the boys with a book opened on her lap, she began to read. “Momma, how about you rest tonight. I’ll read the book and you can just listen,” Landon said.

Mariah’s heart felt warm as she nodded her head and listened to Landon read to her and Colton.

When did her kids get so wise?

They were so attuned to her feelings, and it was almost as if they all knew when she needed a break. Feeling like the luckiest girl in the world, she wrapped her arms around her best friends and closed her eyes. Despite the bad days she had recently, she had a loving family who made her life easier, a million times more bearable.

As soon as Landon finished the last words, she tucked the boys in with a kiss and hug goodnight. “I love you. Nite, nite. See you tomorrow,” the boys said as they did every single night.

“Nite, nite. Love you too, see you tomorrow,” Mariah smiled.

“Momma, I made a heart with my hands,” Colton exclaimed.

Mariah formed her hands together to make a heart and replied, “I made a heart with my hands too.”

Turning off the bedroom light and closing the door, she met Ben in the living room. He patted his lap and she didn’t think twice. Ben rubbed her shoulders, working out the tightness in her shoulders.

“Why don’t you grab your book and read for a bit before bed?” Ben suggested. “Take your mind off things for a little while.”

Actually, that sounded like a great idea. Mariah grabbed her book and wrapped a blanket around her on the couch. She could hear Ben in the kitchen making her a cup of tea. Getting lost in the pages, she startled when she felt Odis jump on her lap to cuddle. The soft purrs of her oldest cat, the words swirling about in her mind, and the calming tea was releasing even more of the stress trapped inside of her.

How much tension and stress did she have? It was seemingly an alarming amount.

It was getting late and Ben had to be up early in the morning. Mariah bookmarked her page and followed her nightly regimen of washing her face, brushing her teeth, and moisturizing. After plugging her phone in and setting the alarm, she slid into bed. Ben came over and tucked her in, like he did nearly every night. “Good night my queen,” he said, kissing her on the forehead. He shuffled under the covers opposite of where she laid and turned the light off.

Mariah closed her eyes and felt the bed dip down at her feet, followed by tiny paws making their way up toward the side of her. Binx circled a few times in bed, patting his paws into the fabric until he was satisfied. Curling up in a ball, he pressed his small body against hers. The last amount of her tension instantly disappeared and was replaced by the unconditional love from her family.

If only they knew how blessed Mariah was to have all of them. If only they could experience how they made her feel. Then they would know, too, that angels really do live among us.

Full disclaimer : This is a typical night of my life. I have been blessed with the most loving husband, kids, and kitty-cats. Of course, things don’t always go as smoothly, but there are often times that they do. I don’t know what I did to deserve so many living, breathing guardian angels, but I am beyond grateful.

While thinking about where to go with this prompt, it was a no-brainer as I thought of the angels in my own life.

Who are the angels in yours?
