Across the Street

Writing Prompt – Day 16

How was your weekend?! I hope it was a restful one!

I really missed writing and I actually wrote on Saturday, taking only one day off this week. But of course, I didn’t post it otherwise you would have seen it lol.

Writing is actually becoming a habit. So excited! I can’t wait for us to look at our writing months down the road and compare it to how we are writing right now. I bet you it will be quite an improvement. & just imagine a whole year from now. Ooh so make sure when you are doing your prompts, you save all of them in a folder on your computer with the date in the title so you can look back and see how much you have grown in your writing skills.

Okay pals, so… my inbox was FULL over the weekend and I was overwhelmed by the number of prompt ideas that showed up in there…

Ha! I’m just kidding. I didn’t even get one. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Lol!!

But our good ol’ friend Google has all the prompts we could ever ask for. Picking one at random, here is Monday’s prompt!

One day at work, you look across the street to see a hooded figure in a black coat pointing directly at you. What do they want?

My example :

If only there were a crystal ball and I could have predicted my future – or lack-thereof I should say – before everything got out of hand. I suppose, though, I shouldn’t have needed some psychic tool to know something bad was going to happen. Something that I, Patrick D. Bosworth was the only one at fault for. Well, me and that cursed guy who refused to quit following me.

***

It was eight a.m. sharp and the Brown’s hadn’t showed up yet. Patrick remained in his car even though he really wanted to go outside and bask in the sunlight. It was already beautiful out with clear skies and temperatures rising to another not-too-cold and not-too-hot kind of day – the perfect day.

Patrick opened his visor and checked himself out in the mirror, double checking for the third time there was no breakfast stuck in his perfectly white teeth. He closed the visor and took a sip of coffee. It had just turned 8:05. He was growing impatient but by the time the Brown’s arrived, he had an ease about him, letting on to his clients he was a laid-back, patient, non-pushy type of realtor. Which was all true of course, except for the patient part. He had been like that ever since he was a child and it was just the way he was with no rhyme or reason.

Hearing tires behind him, he glanced in the rearview mirror and seen a car getting ready to turn off the road. He should have been thrilled they had finally arrived but instead, he jumped slightly when his eyes caught a strange figure across the street. It appeared as if there was a person standing at the edge of the road, dressed in all black, but he couldn’t get a good look before the car turned and blocked his view.

Regardless of the figure, it was show-time. Patrick greeted Kathy and Bill with an energetic smile and glanced across the road. Relieved when he saw nothing was there, he showed the Brown’s their potential dream home. The tour lasted fifteen minutes and by the end of it, the Brown’s wanted to put a bid in for the house.

“Absolutely,” Patrick said. “I can meet you at my office in thirty minutes. This one here is one of those houses to fly off the market. The sooner we get your bid in, the better chances we have.”

An excited Kathy and Bill got back into their vehicles and headed down the road. Patrick stayed behind to close up the house and when he was finished, he glanced across the street on the way to his car. Nothing and no-one was waiting for him there thank God. Once he started his car, he released the braked pedal and stretched to look over his shoulder, slowly backing out of the narrow driveway.

Immediately, he slammed on the brake when he saw the same figure as earlier. The figure in question was pointing directly at him. Squinting his eyes, hoping for better focus, he still couldn’t make out what the guy looked like, he was too far away. Although it did look as if he was wearing a mask – solid white with deep black markings for a creepy-looking face. If the figure was even a man at all – it was possible there was a woman hiding under that mask.

Looking forward, he attempted to catch his breath.

Be brave Pat. It’s not real. You know this. It’s not real.

When he worked up the courage to look back again, he damn near had a heart attack when the figure was now standing behind his car, leaning forward, staring directly into his rear window. A noise escaped Patrick’s lips as he locked his doors in terror. He shut his eyes and counted to 100. When he opened them, he slowly looked back. He was relieved to find the figure was gone. Looking around just to be sure, he concluded the coast was clear. It was all in his imagination, maybe. It looked so real, but then again, it always did.

He cursed himself under his breath. All he had to was slam on the gas when the figure was behind him and he would know the truth instantly. But then again, running someone over wasn’t exactly the kind of thing he was okay just doing.

He didn’t have time to ponder on it anymore, he had a meeting to get to. Hopefully the figure wouldn’t come back again. But of course, it didn’t take long before it did. And it seemed it was never going to quit following him, haunting his every move. But Patrick had a fight in him. He was going to do whatever he had to do to take this person down.

But first, he had to figure out if it was real or not.

Was the figure all in Patrick’s head? Was he real? If so, what did he want and why Patrick? And most importantly… did Kathy and Bill get the house?!?!

Haha, okay, okay, I’ll be serious.

Seriously, I would love to see how yours turned out! Share yours in the comment section below. (:

As for mine, this wasn’t one that I got lost in, needing to know more. But I still managed to create something out of the prompt! It’s quite cool how we can need to know more about a character, setting, situation, etc. that we create in our minds. Yet, as we are writing, we are discovering for our own selves what is happening and who the characters are, sometimes taking us to unexpected places. And even we can surprise ourselves with plot twists we didn’t see coming, even as the author!

This is why I love writing so much. The combination of words that can bring to life a whole new world and speak to readers hearts or merely just to entertain them… It’s simply amazing. And we learn a little something new about ourselves along the way, or merely just entertain ourselves too lol. Now, with that being said…

THIS was not it. Haha! But I think if we went through and edited our work, we could potentially make masterpiece’s out of our practice sessions. Who knows with writing prompts… there may be a diamond in the rough among them. (;

That’s it for today Pals…

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s prompt! (;
