“She opened the fortune cookie expecting a cliché, but what she read made her drop it in shock.”

My example :

Ginger pushed her half-eaten plate to the end of the table and snagged her fork off it. She stood up for a better view of the buffet, contemplating what she was going to fill her plate with next.

Scott, her date, had just gotten to the table with a plate of his own, piled high with crab legs. She smirked at him and decided to stay at the table to help him with the monster of a plate in front of him.

She had only gone on one other date with Scott before, but she had felt as if she’d known him forever. It was so easy to be in his presence. To be anything but herself around him would feel awkward, which was something she was not used to.

As far as she could tell, Scott was absolutely perfect.

They casually talked through dinner and when all the crab legs were gone, they held hands across the table, patiently waiting for the check. When the waitress arrived, Ginger snatched the receipt off the table before Scott had time to grab it.

“Ginger,” he playfully scolded her. He held his hand out and wiggled his fingers. “Now.”

“Mm, mm,” she said, shaking her head. “You paid last time, it’s my turn.”

He narrowed his eyes at her, but it wasn’t enough to persuade her.

She giggled and handed the cash over to the waitress who was patiently waiting – and clearly not impressed with their cutesy little banter. She walked off, her ponytail swinging behind her, and returned a couple minutes later.

“Bye bye now,” she said after tossing a couple fortune cookies onto the table.

“Since you paid, I’ll let you choose first,” Scott grinned.

“Okay, now that is one thing I won’t fight you on,” Ginger grinned back. She waved her hand between the two cookies on the table with her eyes closed, and then grabbed the one she gravitated to.

“Hey, I was gonna pick that one you little brat,” Scott laughed.

Ginger laughed and stuck her tongue out at him. “You go first.”

Scott ripped the packet open and then broke his cookie in two. Sliding the paper out, his eyes widened as he silently read.

“Not fair,” Ginger exclaimed. “You have to read it out loud.”

He sighed. “Okay, fine. But you’re not gonna like it.”

She pinched her brows together, waiting impatiently.

“It says,” he paused, meeting her gaze. “You are going to get lucky tonight.” A wicked grin spread across his face.

“No way,” she said, snatching the paper from his hand. “Wow Scott. It says ‘take the chance while you still have it’.” She tilted her head at him. “How clever.”

He shrugged. “Clever, that’s me. But the offer is on the table,” he winked. “What does yours say?”

She repeated the same steps Scott did with his cookie, even down to her eyes widening after reading it.

“Well,” he said. “I’m waiting.” He tapped his wrist twice.

Ginger sat there with her mouth dropped open.

“Ginger?”

“What kind of sick joke is this?” she snapped.

“What? Let me see that.” He snatched the paper from her hand, reading it out loud. “You only have twenty-four hours to live Ginger.” He raised his brows. “What the hell? It even says your name.”

“Yeah, and the numbers at the top look like my birthday, including the year.” She tried to keep her voice even but she felt like she was going to be sick.

“Well, if you have only twenty-four hours to live, does that mean we are on for tonight?” he nervously laughed, trying his best to make light of the situation.

She shot a look at him. “Not funny. Who did this? I’m going to march right up to that waitress and get to the bottom of this.”

She glanced around the room, but she couldn’t see the waitress anywhere.

Twenty-four hours later, Ginger was never heard from again.
