One, two…

Writing Prompt – Day 69

Use the word “Stifling” somewhere in your writing.

My example :

“Emma and Brody,” Joe announces.

Damn. How did I know he was going to pair me with Brody? Seriously, just my luck.

My hands are shaking as I pull my belt tighter and then I shift my pants so they aren’t dragging on the mat. Brody has a sly smile on his face although I don’t know much about him. I’ve only just started attending Jiu-Jitsu classes a few weeks ago and this is the first time I’ve ever seen him here.

Joe, our instructor, gives Brody a look before setting the timer. The silent conversation tells me that they know each other quite well. It’s as if Joe is telling him to go easy on me. I hope he doesn’t. That ego of Brody’s needs to go down a few notches.

“You ready,” Brody raises his hands and positions his feet.

Did he just wink at me?

Butterflies form in my stomach and I’m not sure if it’s nerves or something else.

Words are caught in my throat, but at least I manage a small nod. I wish I looked more confident but oh well. I already figure it’s unlikely I’ll win this match, however I’m quick on my feet, all I have to do is stay moving and not tap out. That’s as good as winning if you ask me.

“Go,” Joe yells, and now there’s no going back.

The others in our class are sitting cross-legged around the room, backs to the wall. All eyes are on our us, making this situation so much worse. I hope no one can see how much I’m trembling. There’s just something about Brody. Possibly because he’s the most gorgeous guy I’ve ever seen. And pretty soon, our bodies are going to be tangled in each other’s. The thought of it sends a chill down my spine.

We shuffle our feet, anticipating who will make the first move. He does. He tumbles me to the floor and now his body is on top of mine. Oh God, I can’t let myself get distracted by how close his face is to mine.

We grapple around on the floor for what feels like an eternity. Every time he thinks he has me, I find a way to roll away, and I can tell he’s getting frustrated.

“One more minute!” Joe shouts. “Come on guys, you can do this. Someone win this match!”

It’s not a requirement for someone to tap out but Joe is passionate about there being a winner.

I roll on top of Brody but he slips from my grasp beneath me and flips me onto my back, positioning himself on top of me. He pins me down with a wicked smile spread across his face. I struggle underneath the weight of his body, but I can’t get any more leverage. He’s just won and he knows it.

“One, two,” Joe is shouting and time suddenly stills.

Brody leans down, a drip of his sweat rolling onto my chest as he does, and he whispers in my ear, “Three.” The heat from his breath sends goosebumps down my arms and the room is suddenly stifling…

I have no idea how I’m going to concentrate with Brody in this class.
