Writing Prompt – Day 68

Write a romantic scene at a fairly unromantic place.

My example :

“I have a surprise for you,” Cole grins.

I buckle my seatbelt and glance over at him. “You do?”

“Yeah.” He puts his black Dodge Charger in drive. “But…”

I lift an eyebrow. “But what?” Even though we’ve been together for as long as we have, I still get those butterflies I got when I first started dating him.

“Well,” he says, glancing over at me. “You’ll just have to wait and see.”

We’ve been on the road for ten minutes when he turns into our local Walmart. I’m confused. What kind of surprise is at a Supercenter? I try to hide my disappointment but apparently, I’m not doing a very good job at it.

Cole laughs. “What’s that look for Chelsea?”

“Well, I just didn’t think for our four-year anniversary that we’d be going to Walmart.”

My words don’t seem to phase him because he still has a grin on his face. “Aww come on now, it’s not the worse thing in the world.”

Actually, it is. But I don’t tell him that. Every girl wants to feel special on their anniversary, and this is far from what I envisioned.

Cole stops the car to let pedestrians walk across the lot and as soon as it’s clear, he continues forward. I’m even more confused when we pass the normal aisles we usually turn into for a parking spot.

“Cole, where are we going?” I ask, but I doubt he’ll give me an answer. He never lets on when he has a surprise for me. Although as disappointed as I am, part of me finds a small bit of humor in the moment. This is just ridiculous.

Cole laughs again. “Okay, but what if I told you that this is going to be super romantic?”

I shoot him a doubtful look. “I wouldn’t believe you.”

He ignores me and turns into the back lot where there’s only a few other cars parked. From here, all the shoppers going in and out of the store can’t be seen. He finds a spot in the middle of the small square space and parks the car.

“Okay, so…” I shake my head.

He winks at me. “Now we wait.”

“Wait for what exactly?” I look around, trying to find a clue as to what we are doing here.

He unstraps his seatbelt and reaches over to click mine off too. “You’ll see.” He grazes my face and guides me in for a kiss. “Have I told you lately how absolutely lucky I am to have you?”

My heart melts. Even after all the struggles we’ve had during the last four years, my heart aches with how much love I have for this man. “You don’t have to,” I finally say. “I already know.” I can’t help but smile.

As if on cue, a few raindrops start dropping on the windshield, and supposedly this is what we were waiting for.

“This is it,” he says excitedly.

He then takes out his phone and types away on it, searching for the song that we first danced to at one my of cousins’ weddings. That night was one of the best nights we’ve ever had and the fact that he still remembers the song we first kissed to confirms that this is the man I want to spend the rest of my life with.

He finds what he’s looking for and now Ed Sheeran’s song ‘Perfect’ is blaring through the speakers. The rain is falling harder now, and I think he’s crazy the moment he opens his door and gets out. I go to protest but it’s too late, he’s already at my side of the car. I notice he never shut his door and I’m wondering what he could possibly be up to. That’s when I notice the rose in his mouth.

Cole reaches his hand out to me and I reluctantly grab it. “What’s going on Cole?” I ask with uncertainty written all over my face. “You want me to step out in the rain?” It’s almost pouring now. This is absurd.

He takes the soaked rose out of his mouth and tosses it into the car. “Just trust me,” he whispers into my ear as he gently pulls me out of the car.

I’m standing there in the pouring rain, not knowing what to do with myself while he reaches into the car. He restarts the song and cranks up the radio. He takes my hand again and pulls me in front of the car so that the headlights are shining directly on us. It’s not completely dark out but the gray sky has dimmed the sunlight down significantly.

Cole is still holding one of my hands in his and he places his other hand on the small of my back. I try to resist but he pulls me in tight. “Cole, there’s people watching,” I whisper.

He looks around, trying to see the people I’m talking about. He leans into my ear and whispers back, “I wish the whole world was watching right now. I wish everyone, could see how lucky I am.” He kisses the top of my head and I laugh as he twirls me around.

Our clothes are soaked through, and our feet force the rainwater to splash around us as we move romantically to the rhythm of the song. My head is in the clouds, and I can’t believe I doubted him for even a second.

He stops dancing and our faces are inches away from each other. “I love you,” he breathes. And then his lips meet mine. Sparks fly like that day at the wedding, except this kiss is a thousand times more passionate.

Dancing and kissing in the rain…

In a Walmart parking lot…

It doesn’t sound like the most romantic thing, but to me, it’s perfect. He’s perfect. And he’s all mine.
