Running Late

Writing Prompt – Day 66

Someone hits a deer in the middle of nowhere with no cell service.

My example :

Rochelle

I’m already running late. I desperately wish I would have left the house even five minutes earlier. I was specifically told not to even come close to being late to this event.

The small meet-and-greet party is being held for our biggest clients at this firm. Wait no, I said that wrong. They are potential clients. That is why it’s so important that this night goes perfect.

They are going to be looking for people they trust to keep their accounts safe and if I need to still say it, obviously a person who is running late – even if it’s just to mingle for a couple hours – is a million percent not capable of handling such a responsibility. In other words, if I’m late, it’s better if I don’t show up at all. What they don’t know, don’t hurt them.

Now my boss on the other hand, he’ll know. And that is a whole nother’ story if I don’t show up to this party on time. If I can’t make it on time, I might not have a job at all.

I continue following directions on my GPS, which is currently taking me through winding roads. I have to slow down under the speed limit because it’s so dark out. The only thing worse than showing up to this country club out in Timbuktu would be getting in an accident way out here. Although there’s a handful of people showing up to this party, I haven’t seen another car on the road for at least twenty miles.

My hands are gripping the wheel too tight and I realize I need to pull over. If I wasn’t going to be late before, this will most certainly seal my fate. But I can’t risk getting lost out here. I can see the signal on my GPS getting weaker and I’m assuming the same for my phone.

When I pull over, my suspicions are confirmed as the signal is dropped down to only two bars. It’s only a matter of time before I lose signal altogether and I still have another twenty miles to go. Who planned this thing way out here anyway? I have never even heard of this place before. I don’t understand why they would want it to be in such a remote location.

It’s not like anything illegal is going on. It’s a damn meet-and-greet to find out if the client wants to work with us, not some top secret assignment from some very powerful people. Okay, clearly my nerves are really starting to get to me. I just need to calm down. And I’m only going to make it worse the longer I sit here. I need to get back on the road and just make it to the damn place.

Before pulling away, I screenshot the rest of the map on my GPS and send out a quick message to my mother. There. Now someone knows where I’m at if something does happen to me out here. Even though I have two bars, the message is stuck on ‘sending’. All I can do is hope the message sends if needed.

The road is still winding but I can faintly see up ahead that it straightens out. This instantly makes me feel better. I can speed up once I get there.

Shit. That is, if I even make it there.

I swerve to try to avoid the deer that is dashing across the street but it’s too late.
