Writing Prompt – Day 57

Write about your first job.

My example :

“Welcome to Burger King, how can I help you? Okay, would you like that small, medium, or large?”

As gross as it was working with grease and oils all day, I am not ashamed to say that I actually loved working at Burger King when I was 15 years old. Once I got out of work, there was no way I could go and do anything without taking a shower first and my clothes – even after they were washed – still had the greasy smell of Burger King embedded in them, but I still loved it there.

My favorite was working the drive-thru window. Wearing the headset, holding the button down to speak through it, clicking buttons on the computer in front of me, and making sure the customers had everything they asked for. My least favorite was working the front, where people stood waiting for their orders. I don’t know why I preferred the fast-paced drive-thru over the counter but maybe I thrived under pressure.

My second favorite was in the back making and wrapping the food. I liked the burger side the most and I would make it a challenge in my head. I had to be sure to get everything out in an orderly, timely matter. My life depended on it, or at least I would tell myself that as a silly game to make myself get everything right. I prided myself on caring about doing a damn good job and being useful.

As for working breakfast and the fried side, I wasn’t the biggest fan, but I just needed more practice. But overall, as much as fast food gets a bad rep, I do not regret Burger King being my first job. It taught me how to work under pressure while also remaining organized and multi-tasking. And let’s not forget keeping that friendly face while feeling healthy stress to get things done right.

Shoot, if I wasn’t in love with being a hair stylist and you could make bank working at fast food, you could count me in lol! My 12-year-old son has been talking about wanting a job as soon as he possibly can. I found out you can work at McDonalds when you are 14 and I told him that. He’s excited to only have to wait less than 2 years to become more independent and thankfully, I think working fast food can teach you valuable lessons for the skills you need for any career path.

Although we will technically be rivals, I will gladly support my son working at McDonalds! Haha. And on top of it, as soon as he is of age, he will be getting his license. And thank God he wants it just as much as I want him to have it. There will be no slacking kids in my household!

Give them a fish and they will be fed for a day; Teach them to fish and they will be fed for a lifetime.’

I don’t know where that came from. One minute I’m talking about loving working at Burger King and the next minute I’m talking wisdom… What came over me? Lol! I guess let the writing take you where it wants to go, right? Haha! See you all tomorrow! (:
