Writing Prompt – Day 54
She has been walking for hours. Her feet are starting to bleed. But she can’t stop moving… she can’t let him find her again.
My example :
Scarlett ran as fast as she could despite her growing exhaustion. When her lungs felt like they were going to explode, she had no choice but to rest her back against the tree trunk. Gasping for air, her eyes caught two fallen trunks just a few feet from where she was standing. It was the perfect hiding space to crouch down in and when she slid her body in-between them, semi-hidden from the world, she calmed her breathing, allowing herself to catch her breath.
A silent tear strolled down her cheek. Scarlett had been running in the unfamiliar woods for hours with no signal on her phone. She pulled it out to check it again but again, there were no bars. She rested her head against one of the trunks and tried not to think about the pain her feet were in. She could feel the wetness from the parts of her feet that were bleeding. There was no need to look, she already knew that’s what it was and it did no good to look at something she couldn’t fix.
A rustling of leaves came from behind her and she froze, holding her breath. The wind grazed her cheeks and hair and for a split second, she no longer felt the pain in her feet. She no longer thought of her bladder needing a release; her legs, lungs, and head hurting, her exposed skin, desperately needing a coat for warmth. For only a moment, she felt like she had company, good company. It was as if the wind was telling her she wasn’t alone. Even if the wind helped kill her, at least she had something. Her mental state was declining but she had to try to pull herself back in.
That’s when reality hit her again. She had no idea where she was, no signal on her phone, 18% battery life left, her bleeding feet had made it harder for her to walk, darkness was slowly creeping upon her, and she was already beginning to shiver from the temperature dropping.
The fact was, she had no idea how she was going to get out of the nightmare she was in, if she was even going to. But Scarlett also knew that she was willing to die out there in those frightening woods, as long as he never found her again.
