Writing Prompt – Day 52
A daughter tries to set her widowed father on an online dating app – without him knowing.
My example :
Dishes clanked as Diane emptied the dishwasher. It was wednesday, the day she always came over to check up on her widowed father.
“How are you doing dad?” Diane asked.
Joe sighed. “I knew that was coming,” he chuckled. “I’m doing fine honey. You worry too much about me.”
She closed the dishwasher door and looked at him. “Of course I do. It’s been two years since mom has passed and you are alone in this big house.” She wiped her hands on the hand towel hanging over the stove. “You know, it would be nice for you to have a companion, wouldn’t it?”
Joe fidgeted in his seat at the dining room table. “I am fine Diane. Really. You don’t have to worry about your old pops getting lonely.”
Diane walked over and sat in a chair next to him. “But that’s just it. You are hardly old. It would be nice for you to get yourself out there and meet some new people. Even some new friends.”
“I am perfectly fine with my crossword puzzles, books, and Lucy.”
Diane gave him a disapproving look. Conveniently, Lucy entered the room and wrapped herself around Joe’s legs, purring for attention.
“Hey, don’t look at me like that. Change of subject okay,” he said, leaning down to pet the top of Lucy’s head.
Later that night, when Lucy made it home, she thought about the battle she was losing with her dad. The thing was, he was too young to waste away by himself. Her mom had passed away in a freak accident and of course it was a tough thought to think of her dad with another woman, but Diane knew her mom would never be replaced. It wasn’t healthy for Joe to not move on his life. She sat there contemplating what to do.
That’s it, she thought. If her dad wasn’t willing to help himself, she would have to do it for him. She grabbed a glass of wine, opened up her laptop, and typed in Match.com. She then clicked ‘Create profile’ and smiled as she thought of her dad’s new possibilities.
Whether he liked it or not, he was going to live again.
Hope your day is going well and I hope you had fun with this one!
