Writing Prompt – Day 45
Last writing prompt of the week! Let’s get our creative juices flowing!
Tell the story of the worst traveling experience of your life.
My example :
After three hours in the car, we finally arrived at our destination. We parked the truck and grinned ear to ear as we looked up at the lodge we would be staying at for the weekend. We grabbed our luggage that held our bathing suits and headed toward the front doors.
I looked at my husband before we opened the door, grateful to have this much needed getaway with just him and I. My husband held the door open for me as a catchy song played from the speaker above us.
“Welcome to the great wolf lodge, to the great wolf lodge.”
Upon entering the building, my excitement quickly dwindled into anxiety. Standing in line, the next available receptionist called us over.
“Hi, checking in?”
We nodded and gave her our information. I looked around as she checked us in.
“Here are your bracelets to get into the water park and don’t forget these,” she said with a huge smile on her face.
I grabbed two wolf-ear headbands from her and let out a nervous laugh.
“Enjoy your stay!”
We started to walk away but I stopped myself and turned back to her. “Can I ask you something?”
“Sure, how can I help you?”
“I’m just wondering, do adults normally stay here without children?”
She hesitated. “Ye- yeah, of course. People do it all the time, don’t worry about it,” she said with a wave of her hand.
And then I knew.
We walked over to the waterpark and peered through the glass. Kids ran around everywhere in the splash pad and my heart sank.
I turned to my husband. “Did you know this was a place you are supposed to take your kids?”
“Yeah, but I didn’t know it was like this. I thought you could enjoy it as adults too.”
I sighed.
My husband could see my mind stirring. “Babe, we don’t have to stay here. We can explore the city and just come back here at night to sleep. There’s lots to explore.”
I thought about this and then smiled. “Okay, you’re right. Let’s do that.”
Finding our hotel room, we placed our luggage down and then my phone rang. When I hung up from the call, I could have cried. Before we headed to the lodge, we took my car into the shop to get some work done and that phone call was the worse possible news we could find out. My car was going to cost a grand to get fixed – all the money we had tucked away – and now we would not be able to explore. We had no money to spend so we were stuck in the lodge.
Thank God we had a room with a hot tub in it because if it wasn’t for that, I don’t know what we would have done for the weekend besides staring at the four walls, something we could have done much closer to home.
This wasn’t the worst trip I had ever taken, but it was definitely the most embarrassing.
Next time, we will do thorough research on where we are staying and the target guests. But on a positive note, we knew we just had to take the kids there. So less than a year later, we booked a stay as a family and had an amazing time!
Now it’s something we can always look back at, shake our heads, and laugh. Oh, the memories!
Haha, true story. How we could have messed this one up, I don’t know. It’s so obvious The Great Wolf Lodge is for children, but it is a really funny story lol! What was your worse trip?
How’d you do pals?!
