Writing Prompt – Day 42
Here’s your next prompt! (;
You can solve murders simply by stepping foot at the crime scene. Problem is, no one believes you.
My example :
Steve navigated his way through the woods and froze when he reached a patch of lilies. It was happening again. The visions took over his mind and he knew by now it was better to let them play through than to try pushing them out. His stomach curdled as he watched a murder take place in vivid detail. With his eyes remaining closed, he waited for the final scene.
He desperately wanted to run so the visions would stop but his gift forced him to stand his ground. If he was the chosen one to help solve crimes, he couldn’t run when it was too tough for him to stomach. He had a responsibility that someone – somewhere – thought he was the best suited one to handle the job. He wasn’t going to let them down.
Steve’s eyes sprung open. There she was, buried under the patch of lilies, and he didn’t know what he was going to do about it. Given the lack of evidence the perpetrator left behind – and God knows how long ago the crime happened – Steve contemplated what to do next.
He’d been down this road before, and no-one seemed to believe him about the visions. The last time he went to the police about a crime, he nearly got himself convicted. He was lucky that during the investigation they had found something significant enough to get him off the hook. It didn’t look good knowing every detail of the crime without any evidence. You become the number one suspect and of course the crime scene unit wanted him behind bars. It was better to have the wrong person locked away than to have no-one at all if it meant easing the minds of the community. And it didn’t help matters much that Steve wasn’t the most likable person.
The thing with Steve happened to be that he wasn’t the out-going guy like his father tried forcing him to be. All his life growing up, his father would scream in his face to quit being weird, instructing him to just be normal like everyone else, and to grow a damn pair. Steve would cower, shredded in fear as his father would lift his hand, then hit him with so much hate he would black out onto the floor. Maybe his father jarred something in his brain and unlocked some special power with the beatings because it was then that his visions began.
As he regained consciousness into the present, he pushed the thought of his father out of his mind and tried focusing on his next step. He tried hard to ignore the past but the memories kept invading his mind instead. He wasn’t the coward he used to be, and yeah he may be a little weird, but who wasn’t these days? Sometimes he felt like he was still just a boy in an adult body. As if his father permanently trapped him there.
Steve shook the thoughts away and straightened his stance. Not again, he thought. He wasn’t going to resurrect his father by keeping his memory alive. And right now, he had a job to do.
Steve was going to prove that he deserved this unique gift. He could solve crimes, lock away the evil, and help their loved ones find closure. And maybe he could even convince himself that he was worth something more, more than what his father brainwashed him to believe.
But first things first, he had to solve this crime without being a suspect himself. All he had to do was get someone to believe in his visions. Pushing all his doubt aside, Steve picked up a stick and dug tracings in the dirt to mark his way back to the grave.
Is Steve going to convince someone to believe him? I sure hope so! Hope you guys had fun with this prompt!
