The Lie

Writing Prompt – Day 10

Last writing prompt of the week! We’ve been consistent for ten whole days!!

Go us!! (:

Okay, so we are going to end week 2 with a thriller/suspense prompt…

Your best friend tells you that she feels like someone’s been watching her. The next day she goes missing.

my example :

“Someone has been watching me, I swear! You have to believe me!” Jasmine exclaimed.

Kate sighed. She was at a loss for words. They’d been down this road many times before.

“Jasmine, I know it feels real and I really want to believe you. Look, I believe that you believe someone is watching you. But how many times have you felt like this before? And there was always a reasonable explanation, right?”

Jasmine shook her head. “Kate please. This time is different. I know I say that every time. I know I sound like a broken record. But this time it is real. I can feel it in my gut. I just need someone to believe me.”

Kate racked her brain on how to respond. This was her best friend, and she was clearly in distress, but every other month she would come to her and say the same thing, only to find out that there was always a simple reasoning they would laugh off for her severe paranoia. How do you comfort someone who constantly cries wolf?

“Okay, okay. You know I hate to ask this,” Kate winced, “but, have you been taking your medication?”

“Yes, totally! Every day like I’m supposed to.” Jasmine put her hands in the air. “I swear!”

“How about sleep? I know you have trouble sleeping. Lack of sleep can have terrible effects on cognitive functioning.”

“Well, I haven’t been able to sleep well lately but… well, Kate, that’s because I’m being freaking watched by someone!” Jasmine looked on the verge of tears and there was desperation in every word she spoke. Still, Kate wasn’t convinced.

“Okay. How about this… You get a good night’s rest tonight and we will figure everything out tomorrow, I promise.” Kate knew her promise would fall short but she couldn’t help but say it anyway. It was already eleven at night and she had to be up early the next day.

Jasmine nodded slightly. “Okay. I know you have a big day tomorrow. I am a big girl. I can handle this until tomorrow,” she paused and put her finger up, “But if anything happens to me-“

“Nothing is going to happen to you,” Kate cut in. “You will be fine. We will have everything sorted out tomorrow. You’ll see.”

Kate didn’t know that her words couldn’t be farther from the truth.

***

Kate woke up to a phone call an hour before she had to be up. She grumbled as she rolled over and glanced at the clock: 5 am.

Who would be calling this early in the morning?

She answered.

“Kate? This is Julie, Jasmine’s mom. I’m sorry for waking you but I really need to talk to you.”

Kate’s voice cracked as she answered, “Yes, of course.”

“It’s Jas. She never came home last night. I got up to get some coffee and as I walked past her room, her door was open and the bed is still made, just like she left it yesterday. Nothing seems out of place. She doesn’t talk to anyone anymore and she told me she was with you yesterday-“

“She still is,” Kate said before Julie could finish. “I can tell you are worried but she’s fast asleep next to me. I could wake her if you’d like?”

“Oh my,” Julie sighed with relief. “I was scared half to death. No, no. Don’t wake her. Let her get some good sleep for once. I am so sorry for waking you. I didn’t realize she was staying over.”

Kate laughed. “It’s okay really. I have to be up early anyway. I’m glad you are relieved. I should go now though. I have to get ready for my big day today.”

“Oh yes, Jas mentioned to me you were owed a congratulations. We are so proud of you honey. You are doing amazing. Knock em’ dead today!”

“Thank you so much Julie. Talk to you later.”

Kate lied. She lied and she didn’t know why. Well maybe she did know why.

How selfish could a person be?

She was tired of the run around with Jasmine, constantly paranoid that someone was out to get her. Not today, Kate thought. Not on the day she worked so damn hard for. Jasmine would show up. It was just another ‘Jasmine stunt’, Kate was sure of it.

But of course, Kate was wrong.

And her lie was going to haunt her forever.

This definitely doesn’t feel like my best work but that is okay!

I can’t wait to see months from now how much my writing improves and if I take different creative avenues with these prompts. Today I felt like my creativity was lacking. But you still have to try, even on the days you know you aren’t going to produce your best work.

That’s persistence. And that’s what all us writer’s need!

As always, I would love to hear how yours turned out in the comment section below. (:

So…

That’s a wrap for this week writing pals! I’ll see you guys back on Monday!

We have a calling to write & together we will make our dreams come true – one prompt at a time!
