Writing Prompt – Day 9
Alright pals, we are going to take another stab at the Science Fiction genre!
This is definitely not a genre I’m most comfortable with but we have to challenge ourselves to improve. No reward without the risk, and how will we ever know what genre we excel at if we don’t practice them all?
Ahhh.. I’m on to something aren’t I. (;
Okay, enough of my rambling. It’s time to see what we are made of…
You’re an immortal who lives at a beach resort. You have many summer flings with mortals on getaways. One day you see someone you had a hot romantic night with 50 years ago. They look exactly the same.
My Example :
Jason was lounging on a beach chair next to the pool with the sun shining on his tanned skin.
Just another day in paradise.
He lost count many years ago on how long he had been living for, but he knew for sure it had to be right around three hundred years. As for how he looked, he was a rather handsome young adult.
How he came to be immortal was a cliché really. He made a deal with a paranormal entity, and it came out to be more of a curse than a blessing. But, as it always goes, the deal was irreversible. On the bright side, at least people remembered who he was – for the most part. But even then, he could never technically leave a mark on the world. He could be remembered, yes, but he was also invisible simultaneously. The details were complicated, and he chose not to dig too deep into the contract of becoming immortal for the price of his soul. At the time it sounded like a perfect plan compared to dying from the terminal cancer he was diagnosed with, but as the days turned into years and the years into decades, it was more of a nightmare.
The days were like Groundhogs-Day, another cliché, but yet he still somehow found happiness in the paradise he made for himself. The resort he stayed at was an all-inclusive beach resort with palm trees surrounding the entire property. The wind smelled fresh, free of toxins, and the crystal blue ocean was always refreshing after a long day lounging in the sun.
The day started off like every other day. Jason woke up, brushed his teeth (hygiene was still a thing for someone immortal like him), got dressed, slid on flip-flops and his sunglasses over his head, and made his way to the pool. Food wasn’t a necessity, more of a pleasure really, so he always tended to skip breakfast. While lounging at the poolside, he could hear the ocean waves crashing just a short distance from where he was. There weren’t many people in the pool since most of the tourists usually went to enjoy the ocean’s ambiance instead.
Peace and hopelessness. What a strange combination. That is what he felt in paradise.
Jason never had long-term relationships considering they were all at the resort for their vacations and left after a week or so of being there. Intimacies, they were always so fleeting. But his memory was as sharp as a whip, and he never forgot the names and faces of the ladies he had flings with.
And that is how he recognized her.
The sun was beating down and he grabbed the towel next to him to wipe the sweat beads off his forehead. He glanced over toward the entrance when he heard laughter coming through the gates of the pool. He quickly shot up and ripped the sunglasses off his face. Through squinted eyes, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
Impossible. No way was this happening. His eyes were certainly deceiving him. He had to find out if it his mind was losing its whit.
“Becca?!” he called out.
Becca glanced in his direction and the look on her face told him she felt the same way he did. That no way in hell this was happening.
“Uhh, Joe? No… Josh? No wait, Jason. That’s it. Is that really you?” Becca said, leaving her friends behind and rushing over to him.
“You actually remember me?” Jason asked with a bit more excitement than he had anticipated.
“This is… uhh.. is this really happening? Am I just imagining you?” Becca rubbed her eyes and refocused them.
“God, it’s been…” He lowered his voice to a whisper. “50 years? And you haven’t aged a day. How is that possible?”
Becca matched Jason’s volume. “I could say the same for you. Did you… Did you make a deal too?” She asked as she took a seat next to him.
And there it was, in that very moment, that hope was found and neither of their immortal lives would ever be the same again.
Disclaimer : I wrote a little longer than my timer. I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go with it but I found a way and I enjoyed the challenge!
