The Strange Universe

Writing Prompt – Day 7

Okay, so this is going to be a strange one, a science fiction one. I haven’t done any kind of science fiction writing so I am curious to see how this is going to turn out!

We are on a roll with our writing but remember, it doesn’t matter if it turns out good. It’s only practice!

And besides… writing is subjective. Always, always remember that.

Get your timer ready and let’s get creative!

What if the universe as we know it is actually someone’s imagination?

Life is truly funny, isn’t it? How we don’t have all the answers, how some things make sense, how some things don’t at all, and of course, life is full of conspiracies.

Except there is one thing we know for certain, without a doubt, and is the only solid ground we have to stand on…

We are living in Trisha’s mind.

Joe grabbed an umbrella as he headed out the door for work.

“Yeah, yeah. I know. She’s sad again. We know that with Trisha upset again, the rain should last for a few more days. We need to cancel the trip on the boat tomorrow. No way will the weather warrant a trip on the lake. Yep. I know. I’m sorry. Okay, I love you too. See you tonight. Bye.”

After hanging up the phone, Joe raced to his car and drove to the office. Swiping his key card, he pulled the front door open and stepped inside. The rain droplets flickered at him as he fastened the strap around the umbrella.

“Morning Joe,” George said.

Joe nodded his head. “Morning. What do you think of this weather?”

George snickered. “Well, I can say that Trisha seems pretty upset. I’d like to know what for. But those are the questions we won’t have answers to until it’s our time to go. Crazy isn’t it?”

“That’s for sure,” Joe snickered back. “Two days down with this weather. Only roughly three more days to go I’m guessing.”

Just then, the walls of the office shook with such force that pictures were crashing to the floor.

“What the hell is going on?” George yelled.

“I don’t know. This has never happened before!”

The emergency alarm sounded outside and their phones chimed with an alert.

Joe held on to the wall for support as he unlocked his phone.

DEPRESSION WARNING – IN EFFECT IMMEDIATELY

His heart raced as he clicked the warning for more information. The floors were shaking, dishes clanked in the breakroom next to them, and a loud rumble came from the office desks in the other room.

Head to the emergency headquarters for shelter immediately.

Trisha’s Mind

Joe’s stomach twisted in knots. Depression? This couldn’t be real. Depression was a conspiracy; it wasn’t supposed to be something that could actually happen. But it was happening. And he had to get to his wife and to the headquarters as quickly as possible.

Crawling on his knees as fast as he could, he made it out the doors and into his car. His hands shook as he turned the engine over. Car alarms were going off around him as lightning struck, thunder roared, and Trisha’s mind shook with grief.
